Art In Hair

The last time I had my hair done, I had it colored brown (its real color before the gray) with blond highlights and bright red highlights. It looked great when I walked out of the salon and then appalling after that. So I went back. My hairdresser is a young woman named Stephanie and she is only 21 years old. She went to a high school that let her train in hair design while she was in school so that she could begin working while she was still taking classes. Thus, by 18 she had a lot of experience. She is an artist.

Stephanie showed me how to fix my hair to work with the highlights and I've been thrilled ever since. This coming weekend it will already have been a couple of months and I'm having my hair color again refreshed (as in roots touched up).

Now, many hairstylists would not believe me when I'd say I want something stylish yet wild and edgy. They give me a conservative matronly haircut and color.

Not so, I say! I want to brighten up when I look in the mirror and not be bored. I don't care about fitting in. I don't wear makeup except lipstick, so I need some color in my hair! Stephanie gets this.

I have been looking at pictures of friends' hair and loving it. Kelly and Carla are short and sweet and sexy. Lori-lyn is passionately red. Kate is natural and luxurious. Jane is long and lovely. Each one of you is so beautiful.

It looks awesome, Olivia ! You got da funk, my friend. I too have struggled to find the right hairdresser for me - I live in a small city but grew up in Montreal, a true fashion capital. Finding someone to give me "rock and roll" hair in this city was hard ! Finally I have found one - she is 40 years old but has theses awesome purple streaks in her wild shag of a hairdo. She gets it ! Art on the Head is all part of being a creative person for me...and for you , obviously! Wear your new do well !

Kim, I love your hair! It IS important to have creative hair as a creative person, isn't it? Maybe some people don't care, but I'm glad to hear that you do too. Makes me feel like I recognize myself when I look in the mirror. Thanks, My Queen. xoO

Kristine, Yes, I think I am, can you believe it? I hope you get some REST soon, my friend. Thx, sweetie, xoO

I just did a post about some crazy gray hair I had growing in. My husband liked it but I got alot of other comments that I needed to take care of it. I finally did color it. Just my normal auburn shade. I sometimes wish I could change styles or go with a different color.
You look awesome! Glad you are enjoying the color and style. :)

I love the look, Olivia! I've really been toying with the idea lately of cutting all my hair off. I've been coloring it since I was 25 and it needs to be touched up every 3 weeks now. The heat and hot weather has also made it brittle. For deeper reasons, I've kept it long because my mother made me keep it very short when I was growing up. At nearly 46, she still makes comments on how I should cut it whenever I see her. It's kind of like a rebellious thing that I'm not sure I want to keep acting out. Long hair was also my identity for years and now that I see myself for more than that, I'm not sure I need to hold on to it so tightly.

Mary,

We are of an age (although you're younger than I am, I think...still) where we don't have to worry about what people think. I think you'd look gorgeous with gray hair--who cares what people say? I think it's all about how WE feel like ourselves.

You know, when I did this, I got lots of different comments.

LoveHubbie likes me as a blonde. My neighbor thought I should get something "age appropriate". I ended up loving it so I left it that way.

Thank you for your kind words, Mary. You are beautiful whatever your hair color.

Love, O

Kate, That's so sweet. That's exactly the look I was going for--trying to look like myself--the person I am today--and I feel like I hit my stride here. Peace and continued healing to you, xoO

Jane,

Wow, what a big change that would be. I think you'd look great!

That's what happened to me with the blonde--my hair felt like straw and I was tired of it. It felt AMAZING once I changed my color, conditioned it, and cut off a lot of the damaged portions.

Yes, I hear you. Being able to do what you want to instead of reacting to your mother. Even if it's the same thing she wants.

You will look gorgeous however you have your hair, Jane.

Love and blessings, O
